MONROE COUNTY, Ill. – Two young women were killed over the weekend in an accident along Highway 159 in Monroe County.
The accident happened around 10:30 p.m. south of Hecker when a woman driving a Chevrolet Aveo north crossed the center line and hit the women who were driving south in a Chevrolet Cobalt.
The driver of the Cobalt and a passenger in the backseat died. Their names have not been released, but Illinois State Police say they were 20 and 21 years old. Another passenger in the Cobalt was taken to an area hospital and suffered non-life threatening injuries.
Police say the woman driving the Aveo was ejected from her vehicle and is listed at an area hospital in serious but stable condition.
The cause of the accident is under investigation, but police say alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
