ST. LOUIS — The Wood River Police Department is investigating after a man was found dead from a gunshot wound in the parking lot of an apartment complex.
According to a Facebook post from the Wood River Police Department, police were called to the Thompson Street Apartments just before midnight on Thursday for a report of a single gunshot with a person down. When Wood River police arrived, they found a man in the parking lot bleeding from a gunshot wound. A gun was found on the ground near his body.
The victim was pronounced dead a short time later. He was identified as 18-year-old Kaden Topal of Edwardsville.
Officers from Wood River and six other police agencies secured the scene and began investigating. The post said investigators determined a home invasion had taken place at one of the apartments.
"I want to reassure the community this unfortunate incident was not a random act of violence. Our preliminary investigation indicates that the individuals involved were known to each other, and this appears to be an isolated event," Chief Brad Wells said in the post. "We are actively working to gather more information and ensure the safety of our residents. Your safety remains our top priority, and we will keep you informed as we learn more. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding during this time."
No other information was provided. The case remained under investigation.
This story will be updated when more information becomes available.
