ST. LOUIS COUNTY – After two delays, the students of Ferguson-Florissant School District head back to class Monday morning.
School was set to begin August 14, but the continued unrest in Ferguson prompted school officials to postpone the first day until August 18. Growing concerns for students' safety postponed the first day festivities again until August 25.
The unrest stemmed from the fatal shooting of Michael Brown by a Ferguson police officer.
Other nearby districts also had a bit of a rough start as Jennings and Riverview Gardens cancelled a couple days of school, but classes resumed last week in both districts.
The district as well as the St. Louis community has been busy in gearing up for the first day of school.
Last week, Ferguson-Florissant staff members received professional crisis training leading up to the first day.
State Representatives Sharon Pace and Rochelle Gray hosted supply drivesto help North County parents prepare their children for school.
Wydown Middle School students created hundreds of pinwheels with messages of peace to welcome students back too.
