Missouri Commissioner of Education stepping down next year

She oversees nearly 900,000 public school students and families in Missouri.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Missouri Commissioner of Education Margie Vandeven announced Tuesday she will be stepping down.

The move will be effective on July 1, 2024. 

The announcement came during a Tuesday meeting where she gave remarks regarding the decision. 

“Serving as Commissioner of Education for the great state of Missouri has been the honor and the opportunity of a lifetime,” Commissioner Vandeven said.

Vandeven has served as the Commissioner of Education from January 2015 to December 2017, then again from January 2019 to the present. She oversees nearly 900,000 public school students and families in Missouri.

She said she announced her resignation today to give the State Board of Education ample time to find a successor. 

The O'Fallon, Missouri, native graduated from Missouri State University with a bachelor's degree in education. She earned a master's degree from Loyola University Maryland and a doctorate from Saint Louis University.

She has also been recognized as a distinguished alumna from both Missouri State University and Saint Louis University.

Vandeven has more than 30 years of experience in education, including seven at Missouri's top educational post.
