ST. LOUIS — Saint Louis University has laid off 23 staff members and will freeze another 130 vacant positions as it works to cut expenses by $20 million this fiscal year.
The cuts were announced Friday in an email to faculty and staff from SLU President Fred Pestello, student publication University News reported. The current cuts only affect administrative posts and academic positions aren't affected "right now," Provost Mike Lewis confirmed to the publication. The 130 vacant posts being frozen include 30 open faculty positions across all divisions.
SLU currently has 2,600 total full-time employees including faculty and staff, so the staff cut was a 1.4% reduction, University News said. Those who were laid off will be provided with enhanced severance pay and extended medical coverage.
The school will cut another $40 million in expenses in the following two years, Lewis said in a faculty town hall meeting Thursday, according to University News.
