Carl Wayne is a Social Studies teacher at Francis Howell High School.
Wednesday, he was jogging on a trail near the school when Joshua Curtis opened fire on him, shooting him once in the back.
"I just started running," Wayne said.
He said he is still trying to comprehend what happened.
"It was surreal, obviously I have never been shot before. So I did not really know that feeling," he said.
Bleeding from his back, he fell to his knees. He turned around and saw the shooter pointing the gun at him.
"I did not know if he was chasing me, or what his motive was,” Wayne said.
Despite being shot, he only had one worry on his mind – students and where was the shooter going next.
“I knew there wasn't a reason for him to shoot me, so I knew there was something wrong,” he said.
He ran down the trail to Highway D for help, and that's where he flagged down a driver.
"There was a period of time where I think she was like, who is this guy,” he said.
He jumped in the back of her truck and she drove him to Francis Howell High School.
Friday, he's recovering at home, thankful for the outpouring of concerns from friends and former students.
