A 67-year-old woman was arrested after reportedly punching a police officer outside a school. Officers were called after a hit and run accident near Sonora Elementary School Tuesday afternoon. An officer found 67-year-old Gladys Collins behind the wheel of a car that had crashed into a gate at the school.
A 3-year-old boy was in the backseat of the car, later identified as Collins' grandson.
The officer reported Collins appeared under the influence. She struggled with the officer when he asked for her keys, and slapped his hand away. She then started the car, but the officer reached in and turned off the ignition. As the officer tried to get her out of the car, Collins allegedly punched the officer in the face.
A witness helped the officer remove Collins from the car, place her on the ground and handcuff her. Collins was taken to a hospital, then released.
She was cited for felony child endangerment, felony obstructing and resisting arrest, misdemeanor battery on a police officer, misdemeanor hit and run, as well as misdemeanor driving under the influence.
The toddler was released into the care of his grandfather.
