FRANKLIN COUNTY, Mo. — Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) says two cases of Legionnaires' disease was found in Franklin County.
The two reported cases of the serious lung disease were found at the Super 8 hotel in St. Clair, Missouri, on South Outer Road in April of this year.
DHSS officials believe the Legionella bacteria was detected in the hotel's water system. The two people with the disease showed symptoms 14 days after their stay.
DHSS conducted a facility assessment and collected samples at the facility. Preliminary sample results indicate the presence of the Legionella bacteria in the water system. DHSS is actively working with the Super 8 to mediate and correct the facility's water system to help prevent additional people from being sick.
Here are the symptoms of Legionnaires' disease:
- Cough,
- Shortness of breath
- Muscle aches
- Headaches and fever
Additional symptoms may include confusion, nausea or diarrhea.
The serious lung disease can have similar symptoms to pneumonia but can be treated with antibiotics. People who are the most at risk include those 50 years or older, people with a weak immune system or lung issues, current smoker, or taking medication that weakens your immune system.
Health officials say symptoms can begin two to 10 days after being exposed.
Anyone who works at or visits the Super 8 in St. Clair Missouri is urged to seek medical attention immediately.
If you test positive, Missouri health officials ask your doctor to report your illness to your local state health department as soon as possible after your diagnosis.
