O'FALLON, Ill. — Every time a COVID-19 patient is discharged from the hospital, it’s worth a celebration.
The staff at HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital recently held a special celebration when one of their COVID-19 patients was well enough to go home.
Clifford McIntyre, 49, was admitted to St. Elizabeth’s on April 9 and spent five days in the Intensive Care Unit where he was intubated for two days, according to a press release.
McIntyre was the first patient who had been intubated at the hospital to get extubated and discharged so the staff planned a special send off for him as he met his family outside.
Hospital staff and his family greeted him at the discharge lounge with claps, cheers and signs.
McIntyre’s wife also tested positive for COVID-19 and is being cared for in a different area of the hospital, according to the release. As he was being discharged, the couple was able to see each other through a window.
So far, the hospital has had a total of 16 COVID-19 patients who are on their way to recovery.
