City of St. Louis working with state to plan 'mega' vaccination event

Mayor Lyda Krewson said she hopes to be able to announce more information about the event some time this week

ST. LOUIS — St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson said a 'mega' vaccination event is coming to St. Louis, but details are still being worked out.

In her afternoon briefing, Krewson said her office is working with the state on planning for the event.

"We are expecting to be able to announce a 'mega' vaccination event in coordination with the state," she said. "Hopefully some time this week we will be able to announce that we are working with them on that."

It will likely be similar to the event planned in Kansas City this weekend. Two national guard teams will be on hand to administer more than 6,000 doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine to those chosen from a list of people already registered with the Jackson County health department. The event will take place at the parking lot of Arrowhead Stadium on Friday, March 19, and Saturday, March 20.

Krewson said the 'mega' event would likely use Johnson & Johnson vaccines. Krewson said the city has been administering the Moderna vaccine.

"We're looking forward to that, we're going to continue to administer as many vaccinations as we possibly can and to partner with the state on a 'mega' vaccination event that we hope to announce here shortly," she said.

According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services vaccine dashboard, 12.5% of people in St. Louis have received at least one dose of the vaccine and 7.2% of people are fully vaccinated.

The statewide numbers according to the department's dashboard are 19.1% with at least one dose and 10.4% fully vaccinated. Statewide numbers reported by the CDC are slightly higher, 19.6% with at least one dose and 10.5% fully vaccinated.

Krewson said the city held its 14th mass vaccination event on Saturday, administering 1,500 first doses and 200 second doses. On Sunday, the city administered 300 second doses at the St. Louis Housing Authority.
