ST. LOUIS — There's a call for breast milk donors in St. Louis. It’s critical for babies whose moms are not able or choose not to breastfeed, especially the babies who are in critical care in hospitals.
On Thursday, BJC is holding its first milk bank to help feed the most fragile.
Mother's can drop off their unused breast milk at the Missouri Baptist Medical Center at 3015 N. Ballas Rd., St. Louis, Missouri 63131. They’re taking donations starting at 1 p.m.
After the breastmilk is donated it's journey is just beginning.
It’ll be frozen and then sent to a milk bank in Ohio. From there, the breast milk will be sent out to babies in need all across the country.
According to the Human Milk Banking Association of North America about 10 million ounces were donated last year to feed babies.
The event is for mothers who are pre-approved to donate milk.
To become a donor you must be screened, for more information you can call (614) 566-0630 or email milkbank@ohiohealth.com. The process takes about 28 days, and you're asked to give at least 100 ounces of milk over a six-month period.
