ST. LOUIS — Eighth-grader Jaylon McKenzie was a rising football star making national attention for his work on the field.
Then he was shot and killed back in May.
On Saturday, Jaylon's family was able to thank the man who made a difference during their most difficult time.
For the first time, Jaylon's family met NFL star Ezekiel Elliott. He was able to bring some ease to Jaylon's parents, Otis and Sukeena Gunner, as he covered the funeral costs.
"Ezekiel was one of his favorite players and it made it even special because he was from St. Louis," Sukeena said. "He felt if Ezekiel could make it, he could too."
Sukeena and Otis were able to take this moment and personally thank him. They even gave him some mementos like buttons and bracelets to remind him who Jaylon was.
"We knew he had a big heart. It was nice to meet him and let him know what he did for our son because he didn't have to, but he did," Otis said
Even though Jaylon, wasn't physically there, Sukeena said she knows her baby would be smiling during this very moment.
Otis said they are taking it day by day, but their goal is to keep his name alive.
