Local leaders call for change after woman shot while driving on I-70 in broad daylight

"That's a total disregard for life. This is not normal. This is not normal behavior."

ST. LOUIS — It's a photo that has been shared thousands of times across social media.

On Thursday, St. Louis police released a photo of man hanging out of a car window waving a gun and shooting at a woman driving down I-70.

The image took so many people by surprise local leaders are demanding the community stand up to make a change.

"Stopping it comes down to all of us. Everybody has a role to play, " 3rd ward Alderman Brandon Bosley said.

Every day, thousands of people drive through St. Louis along interstate 70 and most of those drivers expect to get to and from home safely.

"People have to feel safe. No matter where they're going or no matter what they're doing," he said.

However, no one ever expects to become a victim of a violent crime while driving down the road.

"We should not take this as something we see every day and deal with it," Bosley said.

Over the last few years, several people have been shot and injured while driving on this busy interstate that runs through north St. Louis. Just this week, police said someone shot a woman in broad daylight. Police said as the woman was driving on I-70 a gunman in a silver Mercedes Benz started shooting at her car. At least one of the bullets hit her. Paramedics rushed her to the hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

"That's a total disregard for life," Bosley told 5 On Your Side. "This is not normal. This is not normal behavior."

Bosley, who represents the neighboring ward where the incident happened, said enough is enough. He's calling on the community to stand up to criminals to stop the terrifying menace to society.

"We have to get out and we have to be proactive realistically," he said. "If we don't get a hold of it then it will escalate, but it's up to us to ensure that we stand up to the people that look like us who are out here creating a havoc."

Police are still looking for the shooter. Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 866-371- TIPS (8477).
