MONROE COUNTY, Ill. — One man was killed and another was injured after a barn they were working to tear down collapsed on them in Monroe County, Illinois.
The incident happened shortly after 9:30 a.m. Saturday on Country Club Lane, north of Waterloo.
Monroe County Sheriff Neal Rohlfing said a company had been hired to take down the barn to sell. While it was being taken down, it collapsed on two workers and caught fire after falling onto a nearby burn pit.
Monroe County Coroner Bob Hill said the 911 call was made by a worker on the scene.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Department, Waterloo Fire Department and Monroe County EMS responded to the scene to free the trapped workers.
A 58-year-old man from Wildwood, Missouri, was pronounced dead at the scene, Hill said. The man's identity has not been released as of Saturday night.
Another man was transported to a St. Louis area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
No further information was released regarding the incident.
