CHESTERFIELD, Mo. — A man driving the wrong way on Interstate 64's eastbound lanes was killed after a head-on collision Saturday evening, according to a crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
According to the report, the wrong-way driver was a 79-year-old from Beaufort, Missouri. Driving a cargo van, the Beaufort man crashed his vehicle into a pickup truck and pushed it into the path of a semitractor, causing the semitractor to crash into the rear of the pickup truck.
The cargo van, still driving west on I-64's eastbound lanes, struck the front of a sedan.
First responders with the Monarch Fire Protection District responded to the crash, but the Beaufort man died at the scene minutes after the collision, the MSHP report said. The cargo van was destroyed. Investigators do not know if he was wearing a seatbelt.
Wearing seatbelts during the crash, the driver and the passenger of the pickup truck, both from Louisiana, were taken to the hospital for moderate and minor injuries, respectively. The pickup truck, a 2023 Silverado, was destroyed in the crash.
The semitractor, a 2023 Peterbilt 579 driven by a Colorado man, was moderately damaged, and the sedan, a 2014 Avalon driven by an Illinois man, was extensively damaged. Both had to be towed away from the scene. The crash report did not include any other reports of injuries.
Traffic on Interstate 64 was disrupted Saturday night in Chesterfield after a multi-car crash. Missouri State Highway Patrol said the crash happened around 8:40 p.m. at I-64 Eastbound and Timberlake Manor Parkway, leading to a closure of a portion of I-64 in that area. The highway has since reopened.
