IRON COUNTY, Mo. — A fire that burned nearly 800 acres in southeast Missouri is under control after nearly 40 fire agencies helped surround the fire.
According to a news release from Iron County Emergency Management Director Lucas Anderson, the Pilot Knob Fire Protection District was called to a fire at about 1 p.m. Tuesday. Crews started battling the fire and put out a call for more help.
Anderson said 38 agencies responded to their call and helped fight the fire. He said the fire was reported as 100% contained at about 9:30 p.m.
The fire continues to burn inside the fire line, but it is no longer expanding. Anderson said the contained fire is expected to continue burning for days. Smoke and flames may be visible during that time.
Fire crews and crews from the Missouri Department of Conservation and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are in the area monitoring the fire line to make sure the fire doesn't jump the line.
No injuries were reported in the fire.
Anderson said officials think the fire started when a landowner was cutting back brush, which resulted in a grass fire. He said the weather conditions contributed to the fire spreading quickly.
A red flag warning and wind advisory were in effect in parts of Missouri on Tuesday and Wednesday. Red flag warnings remain in effect in parts of northwest Missouri.
"As we always say, in dry and windy conditions, please refrain from burning during these conditions and when Red Flag Warnings are issued for our area," Anderson said in the news release.
