UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. — As the tax filing deadline approaches, it’s a busy time tax preparers at H&R Block. That includes Johnnie Cole who will turn 90 years old this year.
Cole's unique story is a testament to her lifelong passion for figures and her dedication to helping clients navigate the complex world of taxes.
"I've always had an inkling for numbers," Cole told us. "It's just fascinating. Numbers have rhythm, numbers like 8, 6, 3, 7, 4, 9 – that's rhythmic."
Before embarking on her career as a tax preparer, Cole worked as an accountant, at a time when the profession looked quite different. "At that time, it was posting by hand in ledgers, and I had to balance the bank statements. I had to make sure if I was missing a penny, I had to find that penny," she recalled.
At H&R Block, Cole finds joy in helping her clients secure refunds. "That feels great!" she exclaimed. Despite her extensive experience, Cole recognizes the importance of staying current with the ever-changing tax code. "After taxes, we have classes we have to take, so that's how we keep up with the changes," she explained.
As Cole approaches her ninth decade, she admits that this tax season might be her last at H&R Block. After dedicating so much of her life to the profession, she looks forward to having more free time during tax season. "But it's been fun," Cole said, reflecting on her remarkable career.
With tax day just around the corner, countless Americans will be rushing to file their returns. For Johnnie Cole, it's another opportunity to find the rhythm in numbers and help her clients navigate the intricate world of taxes one last time.
