Abandoned brick building collapses after recent fire in south St. Louis

No official cause for the collapse has been provided.

ST. LOUIS — An abandoned brick building collapsed in south St. Louis Monday afternoon.

The collapse caused brick debris to spill onto the nearby sidewalk on the 3000 block of Missouri Avenue.

Neighbors said the building caught fire months ago and has since become a dumping site for trash. Items such as mattresses, old wood or other garbage are commonly dumped inside and outside of abandoned buildings in the area.

The practice was a nuisance, neighbors say.

No official cause for the collapse has been provided.
