All occupants are safe after a hoarding-related fire in a St. Louis home

The first crew on the scene swept the building and made sure everyone inside was accounted for, according to Fire Captain Garon Mosby.

ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Fire Department responded to a fire early Sunday morning, braving below-freezing temperatures.

Firefighters arrived at the scene of a heavy fire in a two-story, two-family occupied home at 4200 Chouteau Avenue around 6 a.m.

The first crew on the scene did a sweep of the building and made sure everyone inside was accounted for, according to Fire Captain Garon Mosby. In total, 40 firefighters came to assist.

"There were hoarding conditions here, which means there are a lot of things that can burn," Capt. Mosby said.

The firefighters contained the fire to just one house, leaving the two homes on the sides of the building unaffected.

A firefighter was injured on the scene when they slipped and hit their head. They were treated by EMS and taken to the hospital for treatment. The injuries are non-life-threatening.

No other injuries were reported.

Firefighters did not say how many people were in the building at the time of the fire.
