ST. LOUIS — The Alzheimer’s Association wants to help families manage the holidays. There’s a class Wednesday evening with advice for making this time of year enjoyable for the entire family.
The class offers holiday themed tips from behavior to decorating advice. They want to empower caretakers to have open communication for family members or loved one’s who aren’t regularly around the person living with Alzheimer’s or dementia.
The holidays can be exhausting so make sure to monitor that person with an illness and give them breaks when needed.
“Christmas lights, you can have them but maybe avoid the big flashy ones that could invoke confusion,” said Jeremy Koerber, with the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Missouri.
“Big holiday displays shrink it a little bit, top the point where you are still festive, you are still in the holiday mood but for the person living with dementia it still is a calm environment for them.”
The class begins at 6 p.m. at 9370 Olive Boulevard. To register, you can call (800)272-3900.
This number is also a 24/7 helpline, call anytime if your family experiences an incident with a loved one.
