Ice skating coach unable to use legs after devastating St. Louis crash

"If I was with her, I would have died," the coach's daughter said.

ST. LOUIS — A devastating car accident in St. Louis is keeping a beloved figure skating coach off the ice.

Maria de Lourdes Solorio Gumersell was involved in a life-altering car accident near the intersection of North Market Street and Grand Boulevard on Dec. 16 when another vehicle T-boned her. The ice skating coach and single mother was left with multiple pelvic fractures and unable to move her legs.

Maria's daughter, Camille Gumersell, spoke with 5 On Your Side about the accident.

"If I was with her, I would have died," Camille said.

The driver who hit Maria's car ran a red light and flipped the car over. The car was bent in around Maria, Camille said.

The St. Louis Fire Department removed Maria from the car and she was transported to a local hospital. She has since undergone surgery and is on the road to recovery at a rehabilitation facility.
