St. Louis animal shelter seeking homes for dogs ahead of temporary closure

CARE STL must remove all dogs from its Clark Avenue facility by Dec. 18 in order to make repairs necessary to renew its license.

ST. LOUIS — CARE STL is urgently asking the public for help removing all dogs from its Clark Avenue shelter ahead of its temporary closure.

CARE STL's Clark Avenue location will close on Dec. 18 in order to make repairs to the facility that are necessary to renew its licens, according to a news release from the nonprofit. Repairs are expected to be completed by Jan. 1.

In the meantime, the shelter is asking for the public's assistance in fostering or adopting because all animals must be removed from the facility during the repairs, which will cause fumes and chemical exposure.

"We are deeply committed to providing the best possible care for all animals in the shelter," CARE STL Executive Director Dr. Abbie Knudsen Atteberry said in a statement. "We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by these temporary changes. Our primary concern is the well-being of the animals in our care, and we appreciate your understanding and support during this crucial repair period.”

Starting Thursday, the shelter will be implementing emergency shelter operations status in order to limit the number of animal intakes ahead of the repairs. The shelter will only be accepting emergency intakes from Animal Control. That includes:

  • Pets in medical distress requiring immediate treatment to prevent significant suffering or death.
  • Aggressive animals posing an immediate threat to public safety
  • Animals in immediate danger, such as cruelty and abuse cases.
  • Animals involved in agency assist calls, including evictions, hospitalizations and arrests.
  • And animals legally abandoned even after appropriate notification, when applicable.

CARE STL's adoption center, located at 2700 Walnut Place, is open from 1-7 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekends.
