How to help Webster University students displaced by Shrewsbury apartment fire

You can donate through an online crowdfunding campaign, or bring clothing and essentials to a drive this Monday.
Shrewsbury Fire Chief Chris Amenn said the fire displaced at least 30 residents. More than 20 of them are international exchange students at Webster University.

SHREWSBURY, Mo. — Webster University is helping students displaced this week by a Shrewsbury apartment fire.

The Tuesday fire at the River Crest Apartments on 7144 Murdoch Avenue displaced 30 people. The university said 18 of those are current Webster students.

The college has opened an online crowdfunding campaign where people can donate money.

The school is also hosting a collection drive on Monday, Oct. 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at West Hall, 240 Edgar Road. They are looking for these items:

  • Small, Medium, and Large FEMALE clothing items (shirts, pants, undergarments, socks, hoodies, jackets/coats)
  • Medium and Large MALE clothing (shirts, pants, undergarments, socks, hoodies, jackets/coats)
  • Female shoes in size 5, 6.5, 7, 8, 8.5 – especially closed toe shoes, sneakers, or boots
  • Male shoes in size 7-12
  • Luggage, backpacks, or bags (16 needed)
  • Twin size bedding, throw blankets
  • Pillows and pillowcases
  • Cleaning supplies, laundry detergent (must be new with seals)
  • Shower curtains (new)
  • Cooking items (pans, pots, utensils, plates, bowls, baking sheets, Tupperware)
    Please note – toiletries are not needed

The college said Student Affairs staff met with impacted students Tuesday to figure out needs and develop a response plan. It said the American Red Cross provided students with emergency financial aid and care packages with toiletries and other items.

The university also said all students have since found temporary housing, and they are working to find them long-term solutions.
