Home in Barnhart destroyed by fire Wednesday morning

The homeowner told 5 On Your Side that the fire started around 5 a.m., and they were alerted by smoke detectors inside the house.

BARNHART, Mo. — A house in Barnhart, Missouri, was destroyed by a fire Wednesday morning.

Five fire trucks were on the scene of the fire on the 1700 block of Dandridge Lane when a 5 On Your Side photojournalist arrived on the scene at about 6:20 a.m. Firefighters were still surrounding the house, but the flames had been extinguished.

The homeowner told 5 On Your Side that the fire started around 5 a.m., and they were alerted by smoke detectors inside the house. He said all the people living in the house were able to make it out safely, but a dog was killed in the fire. The fire also damaged two cars.

"Check your smoke detectors, check your smoke detectors," the owner said. "Make sure the batteries work. If we hadn't heard it, it could have been a lot worse, a lot worse."

Video from the scene showed the home burned down to the studs with almost no part of the structure remaining. Nearby homes were also damaged by the fire.
