JERSEYVILLE, Ill. — Illinois American Water issued a boil water advisory Tuesday night due to a water main break in the area.

According to a notification from the water company, the water main broke at about 9:30 Tuesday night. The notification said the repair would take six to eight hours to repair, but as of 8:30 a.m., the boil water advisory remained in place.

The order encompassed the whole city.

Officials said to boil water for five minutes before using it. Use boiled water for drinking, brushing teeth, food preparation or any other consumption, like diluting fruit juices. Let the water cool before use.

Dispose of ice cubes and do not use an automatic ice maker. Use one teaspoon of bleach per gallon of tap water to disinfect dishes or cleaning food preparation surfaces.
