Bayer quietly acknowledged it wasn't adding promised jobs

Bayer has cut local staff amid legal troubles over Roundup weed killer and a new operating model aimed at reducing bureaucracy and debt.

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — Bayer's plan to add St. Louis jobs was praised by the state's top leader.

It was 2019, and Gov. Mike Parson, flanked by St. Louis County Executive Sam Page and a top Bayer crop science executive, held a news conference in Jefferson City, telling the public that the firm would add 500 jobs at its Creve Coeur crop science unit — and retain 4,400 positions there and in Chesterfield.

The state was to aid with more than $44 million in new tax incentives in exchange for Bayer bringing jobs here and promising other organic growth.

Instead, Bayer retrenched locally. The Business Journal reported the company has cut local staff amid legal troubles over the multinational's Roundup weed killer and a new operating model aimed at reducing bureaucracy and debt, plus addressing the litigation. The full scope of the cuts wasn't clear, but Bayer has said it would reduce the number of managers by 40%.
