ST. LOUIS — BJC HealthCare and Saint Luke’s Health System said they'll combine on Jan. 1, creating a cross-state system with 28 hospitals and hundreds of clinics.
The two health systems said Wednesday that they have signed a definitive agreement to combine. The deal calls for Saint Luke’s to fold into BJC, though both parties will retain their branding in their home markets — Kansas City for Saint Luke’s and St. Louis for BJC.
Richard Liekweg, CEO of BJC, will continue in that role for the combined system. Dr. Melinda Estes, CEO of Saint Luke’s, previously had said she planned to retire at the end of this year.
The combination creates a health care behemoth with revenue of approximately $10 billion, according to a release. Beyond the number of hospitals — 14 — the two each bring to the combined system, each also brings hospitals that are among the largest in their home markets.
