ST. LOUIS — Students in the joint engineering program at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and Washington University will soon have access to an internship program at The Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA) in the St. Louis area as they complete their degrees.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for students to be exposed to the Boeing work environment and participate in the real-world projects,” said Haiyan Cai, an UMSL professor of mathematics and statistics and associate dean of the joint engineering program.
The joint program consists of upper-level UMSL engineering students who take undergraduate courses on the Washington University campus taught by Wash U faculty members.
Boeing is providing up to $1.4 million over three years for the internship program. Students will be paid $19.50 per hour for the first 20 hours and $22 per hour after that, Cai said. Boeing declined to comment on financial details of the program.
Students will be in the program for varying periods and are expected to work at Boeing up to 20 hours per week. Boeing will assigns tasks, such as helping to modify engineering documents, Cai said.
The aerospace giant also will pay for UMSL to hire a program manager to oversee the internship program, dubbed the Engineering Services Program. The program is set to start next month and as many as 20 students could be chosen to participate, according to UMSL. The joint engineering program typically has about 200 students in the upper level and another 50 listed as pre-engineering who are taking math, physics and chemistry courses.
