Boeing bypasses union negotiators, sends 'best and final' offer to machinists in bid to end strike

RENTON, Wash. — The Boeing Co. offered new terms Monday to 33,000 striking machinists, calling it the “best and final” contract deal it would present. Union representatives said the new offer is evidence the jet maker can do better.

Boeing sent the offer directly to workers Monday morning, bypassing union negotiators and flaring tensions between the parties. The move came after talks broke down Sept. 18, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers said in message to workers Monday evening.

"This offer was not negotiated with your Union; it was thrown at us without any discussion," union representatives said in the message, calling Boeing's move "a huge mistake" that will hurt negotiations.
