ST. LOUIS — Two congresswomen from the St. Louis area were among 53 House members who urged the Biden administration on Wednesday to conduct a comprehensive regulatory review of Nippon Steel’s pending acquisition of U.S. Steel.
“To preserve U.S. domestic steel production capacity and to ensure that steel production jobs remain good jobs going forward, it is critical that any company that acquires U.S. Steel commits to respecting and working collaboratively with the company’s workforce,” wrote the members, including U.S. Reps. Nikki Budzinski and Cori Bush, to President Joe Biden.
Budzinski, whose district includes U.S. Steel’s Granite City Works, and Bush are Democrats. Budzinski is vice chair of the Congressional Labor Caucus, which led the effort to issue the letter to Biden signed by 53 House members. A U.S. Steel spokesperson didn't comment. The White House didn’t immediately return a message seeking its response.
