Report: Business group, city agency should buy downtown St. Louis buildings

The report examined how to make Gateway Mall a “more-vibrant, people-centric hub” that can help spur more activity downtown.

ST. LOUIS — Greater St. Louis Inc. and St. Louis Development Corp. should purchase multiple buildings downtown to strengthen the Gateway Mall that runs between the Gateway Arch and St. Louis CITY SC’s CityPark, a new report says.

That’s one of several recommendations offered in the report from real estate nonprofit Urban Land Institute focused on bolstering the Gateway Mall, an 18-block stretch of parks and green space located in the center of the city’s downtown and Downtown West neighborhoods. ULI’s report specifically focused on Gateway Mall’s blocks between North Broadway and 11th Street and the blocks just outside that portion.

The report examined how to make Gateway Mall a “more-vibrant, people-centric hub” that can help spur more activity downtown. It determined that downtown should seek to be the St. Louis region’s “central social district,” focusing on being a location to convene people, shifting its identity from serving as the city’s central business district.
