ST. LOUIS — The James S. McDonnell Foundation is requesting proposals for $2 million in grants, encouraging applicants to present ideas that support economic mobility and wealth-building in the St. Louis metro area, the organization announced Thursday.
It is the first time the foundation has launched an open call for grant opportunities since JSMF pivoted in December 2023 from funding global scientific research on the complexities of human cognition and human systems to a sole focus on St. Louis. Its new mission is inclusive and equitable economic growth. Previously, grant proposals have been by “invite-only” under the new emphasis.
“The open call is designed to surface innovation, new ideas, new connections and collaboration," JSMF President Jason Purnell said in an interview.
The foundation, among the largest in the region, is seeking proposals in two categories from nonprofit groups and for-profit entities with a nonprofit arm, he said.
