ST. LOUIS — The Improv Shop is expanding, as the improv comedy venue and training center has experienced a boom in popularity post-COVID.

“We actually have more people in class than ever before,” founder and owner Kevin McKernan said. Improv comedy “just feels like the antidote to some of the stuff that sucked about COVID.”

The Improv Shop, at 3960 Chouteau Ave. in Botanical Heights, within the next few weeks will open The Annex, at 4372 Vista Ave., about a mile down the road in Forest Park Southeast, near The Grove. The new space will be used for improv classes and as a practice space, and it additionally has a small venue that will host experimental shows, McKernan said.

The new space was needed, as The Improve Shop has increased its enrollment to more than 260 students this year, up from between 175 and 200 students before the pandemic began.
