ST. LOUIS — A north-south expansion of the MetroLink light rail system could cost $1.1 billion, according to estimates submitted to the region's planning organization, up significantly from past figures.
The information was given ahead of meetings at East-West Gateway Council of Governments, the regional planning organization, which this month and next will hear more information from Bi-State Development, which runs the Metro Transit system that includes MetroLink. East-West Gateway Council of Governments is being asked next month to sign off on a so-called locally preferred alternative for the route, allowing Bi-State to seek federal grants for the project.
The in-street route, arrived at in 2022, is to run from Jefferson Avenue at Chippewa Street north to Natural Bridge Avenue in the city of St. Louis. It would feature a new transfer station connecting to the existing MetroLink system.
