Spin scooters popped up on St. Louis streets Monday, unveiling yet another company to enter the St. Louis electric scooter market.
San Francisco-based Spin first launched in 2017 and was acquired by Ford Motor Co. in 2018. It launched 400 scooters throughout St. Louis, officials said. The City of St. Louis caps each company's local fleet at 2,500, according to its website.
Spin is charging $1 to unlock a scooter plus 15 cents for every minute of the ride.
Lime and Bird also still operate electric scooters in St. Louis. Lime, which launched with a bike program in downtown St. Louis last April, decided to pull its bikes from St. Louis streets in February. At the time, the company said it would replace its bikes with a fleet of scooters.
In addition to Lime, Bird also offers scooters across the city. The company finalized an operating agreement with the city of St. Louis in August. Bird scooters first appeared in St. Louis in July but were pulled just one day after their appearance. The company in July submitted the necessary paperwork to operate in the city, according to a Bird spokesperson, but the city had not issued a permit at the time and asked the company to remove the scooters.
