ST. LOUIS — As the new Veterans Affairs hospital in St. Louis moves forward, a nonprofit organization that runs housing for families of hospitalized veterans wants to buy sites for a new house near the new hospital.

Fisher House, an international nonprofit that builds family housing near veterans’ hospitals, wants to build a new location near the expanded John Cochran VA Medical Center in Grand Center, pending final approval from Congress of the more than $1 billion VA expansion project.

A local 501(c)3 nonprofit branch of the national organization, Friends of Fisher House St. Louis, operates a house near St. Louis’ other VA hospital, the Jefferson Barracks VA Medical Center, in south St. Louis County. That currently serves patients of both VA hospitals, but when John Cochran expands, patients coming from a surrounding seven-state area will create demand for a second St. Louis location, Fisher House said.
