ST. LOUIS — The locally based grocery chain is working with Instacart Inc., the grocery tech and delivery company, to roll out AI-powered shopping carts to three St. Louis-area Schnucks stores later this year, the companies said Wednesday.
The new shopping carts use so-called "computer vision" AI to automatically identify items, allowing customers to bag their groceries as they shop, bypass the checkout line and pay through the cart from anywhere in the store.
The shopping carts will connect to the Schnucks Rewards App, allowing customers to access clipped promotions and to "light up" electronic shelf labels from their phones to easily find items, Schnucks’ Chief Information and Supply Chain Officer Bob Hardester told the Business Journal.
Schnucks also will test a version of the carts where customers manually scan items before placing them in the cart, officials said.
