ST. LOUIS — Soft Surroundings, the St. Louis-based retailer that sells women’s clothes, beauty products, gifts and home décor, will close its remaining brick-and-mortar stores by the end of the month.
The closures are part of the plan announced when the retailer's parent, Soft Surroundings Holdings LLC, in September filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas in Houston.
When Soft Surroundings, then owned by Los Angeles-based private equity firm Brentwood Associates, filed its bankruptcy plan, it had 44 leased stores across 24 states, roughly $750,000 in cash and about 650 employees, most of whom worked in stores, according to court documents.
The "restructuring support agreement" called for Soft Surroundings' direct-to-consumer business to be sold to online women's clothing retailer Coldwater Creek and continue as an e-commerce operation only. The plan also called for the company's brick-and-mortar stores to be liquidated and closed.
