ST. LOUIS — St. Louis lawmakers on Friday passed legislation to set up a citywide permit system for short-term rentals such as are found on Airbnb. It now goes to St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones for her signature.
The move came after significant debate in the community, with some saying the rules didn't go far enough. Others, like aldermen speaking at Friday's meeting, cited concerns that regulations could be too onerous, impacting people who need the income from short-term rentals to pay their mortgage.
The legislation came amid concerns that some short-term rentals were wreaking havoc on parts of the city, with neighbors, including downtown, complaining of parties and illegal activity.
The legislation requires a permit to operate a short-term rental; designates a short-term rental agent to respond to concerns; and sets up an application process and process for the appeal of a denial of a permit and for revocation of a permit.
