ST. LOUIS — The city of St. Louis said Friday that it's cleared and secured the former hospital known as St. Alexius and then South City Hospital.
Closed last year, Mayor Tishaura Jones' office said the hospital's Jefferson Campus had become "a significant safety concern for the surrounding neighborhoods."
It didn't immediately respond to questions about who was in the hospital property or how it was secured. The Riverfront Times earlier this month published a report quoting Gravois Park neighbors as saying that the property had not been secured and was a haven for squatters and burglars interested in machinery and medical equipment that had been left behind.
Jones' office said the government had been in contact with the property owners for several months, "demanding that they take the necessary steps to properly secure their building."
