The new concept will fill a vacant restaurant space on Washington Avenue downtown in the Mercantile Exchange building.

ST. LOUIS — Mike Johnson says that having a healthy downtown is critically important to the St. Louis region.

That’s partly why he — alongside Charlie Downs and David Molina, part of the team behind St. Louis staples Sugarfire Smoke House and Hi-Pointe Drive-In — is opening a new restaurant concept, Hot Pizza Cold Beer, at 610 Washington Ave.

It’s also a lucrative business move: “The Sugarfire down there for years has been our second-highest grossing location, and we do some big sales in some places,” he said. “Hi-Pointe does great down there, right by the convention center.”

Johnson, who declined to share exact revenue figures, said, “We love downtown."

The new eatery will open early next year, likely in January, he said.

Hot Pizza Cold Beer, as the name suggests, will serve a variety of hot pizzas and have 30 cold beers on tap, he said.
