ST. LOUIS — The city of St. Louis' population loss last year ranked it among the worst performers in the country, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates released this week.

The city's population loss slowed last year but remained significant, as the U.S. Census Bureau estimated it lost more than 4,400 residents for the year ended July 1, 2023, or 1.5%. It ended at 281,754 residents.

That was down from a population loss of 2.5% in the prior year, but still ranked the city among the worst performers in the U.S. by percentage population loss.

Of 1,909 cities analyzed by the Census Bureau, St. Louis' performance came in at No. 1,886 for 2023, the new figures showed.
