St. Louis Post-Dispatch to shutter Maryland Heights printing facility, lay off 72 workers

The Post-Dispatch would still publish a print edition seven days a week, "and you will not see a change in your delivery times," Executive Editor Alan Achkar said.

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. — The St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Monday said it would shutter its Maryland Heights printing facility and lay off 72 workers there, just the latest cost-cutting measure as its Iowa parent continues to generate less revenue.

In a post on the newspaper's website, Executive Editor Alan Achkar said the Post in January would stop using its current presses in Maryland Heights and outsource printing to a Columbia, Missouri, facility owned by Gannett. Gannett owns the Columbia Daily Tribune newspaper.

"It’s not a decision our company made lightly but comes at a time when reading habits continue to shift to digital platforms," Achkar wrote.

Achkar said the Post-Dispatch would still publish a print edition seven days a week, "and you will not see a change in your delivery times."

"The print edition is not going away," he said, adding that earlier deadlines would mean that Cardinals night game coverage would not appear in the next day's sports section.
