ST. LOUIS — St. Louis restaurants racked up 20 awards in Wine Spectator magazine's Restaurant Awards this year, up from 19 last year.

Wine Spectator recognizes restaurants whose wine lists offer interesting selections, are appropriate to their cuisine and appeal to a win range of winer lovers, the magazine said.

Balaban's restaurant, located in Chesterfield for nearly 10 years, will come under new ownership next month before it moves to a new location in the Central West End.

Wine Spectator hands out awards in three categories: the Award of Excellence, represented by one wine glass; the Best of Award of Excellence, represented by two wine glasses; and the Grand Award, represented by three wine glasses.

Eleven restaurants received the Award of Excellence, while nine received the Best of Award of Excellence. No local restaurant received the Grand Award.

It's the first brick-and-mortar for this concept, which launched as a food truck late last year

Annie Gunn's in Chesterfield has held the Best of Award of Excellence the longest — since 2003, while Fleming's Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar in Frontenac has held the Award of Excellence the longest — since 2005.
