UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. — A long-running independent grocery store will close at the end of the year.

Pete’s Market, at 7434 Olive Blvd. in University City, also sometimes known as Pete’s Shur-Sav, will close Dec. 31, after 64 years of business, according to a sign posted on the door this week.

Owner Peter Sarandos Jr.'s father, Peter Sarandos Sr., started the market on Delmar Boulevard in 1959.

Food has become more expensive and harder to create deals for customers, and sourcing some of the rarer items that Pete’s is known to carry has also grown more difficult.

Sarandos Sr. had expanded the grocery store to several locations in the decades since opening the first location, but the University City location is the last location of the grocery store that remains open.
