Central West End vacant three-story home fire causes tons of smoke to drift above St. Louis

The building has heavy fire extending through the roof, the St. Louis Fire Department said.

ST. LOUIS — Friday morning commuters witnessed a large amount of smoke billowing into the sky in St. Louis.

The smoke was drifting up from a three-story building that was on fire in the 4300 block of Washington Avenue, the St. Louis Fire Department said. The building was reportedly vacant at the time of the fire.

Firefighters deployed one line to fight the blaze while other companies transitioned into defensive operations, a post from the department said.

"Two aerial waterways, a deck gun and two hand lines working," the department said. "All members operating exterior, outside the collapse zone."

5 On Your Side team members who live near the area said they could smell the smoke while standing outside their homes.

This is a developing story. This article will be updated with the latest information as it is released.
