Chaifetz Arena installs metal detectors

"We just want to let fans know that our number one priority is their safety and security."

There is a new effort to keep families safe while watching a game, concert, or show.

Chaifetz Arena has installed walk-through metal detectors at all five of its public entrances.
Basketball fans went through them for the first time Friday night.

"We've been looking at these for a while," general manager Jeremy Huesling said.

Previously, security guards used hand-held wands. Huesling said the new metal detectors add another layer of security.

"We just want to let fans know that our number one priority is their safety and security," he said.
Pat Tosie visited the arena on Friday.

"I'm not surprised they have them," Tosie said. "They're at Scottrade Center, they’re at Cardinals games."

They're also at the airport. However, the process is a little different at the arena.

"It's not as thorough as the airport, where you have to take off your shoes and belts," Huesling said.

Still, you have to put your phone, keys, and any large metal objects in a bin. Chaifetz chose to introduce this process during the SLU women's basketball game, which tends to draw a smaller crowd than other events.

"At first, as we get used to this new process, it might take a little bit longer," Huesling said.

Tosie said it didn't take long to get through Friday and she welcomes the machines.

"Pretty swift," she said. "I'm happy that they have them here, too, just to feel extra secure."
