St. Louis-area grocery store closed after water main break

The property's owner didn't give 5 On Your Side an estimate for when the problem would be fixed.

CHESTERFIELD, Mo. — A St. Louis-area strip mall is temporarily closing a Trader Joe's after a water main break early Thursday morning.

Chesterfield Crossing is located in Chesterfield off Clarkson Road. Missouri American Water confirmed with 5 On Your Side that the break is on private strip mall property and is not one of the utility's water mains.

A Trader Joe's spokesperson confirmed the store's closure, saying they're working to reopen the store to customers as soon as possible. Workers were seen Thursday morning bringing equipment into the store to clean up water damage.

A store manager told 5 On Your Side that workers aren't yet sure why the break happened and that there isn't any significant or permanent damage inside or outside the store. The store, however, will have to meet several safety measures before it re-opens because a lot of water was in the front entrance.

The property's owner did not share details about an estimated reopening time for the store, or whether other businesses at Chesterfield Crossing were affected.

Other businesses in the strip mall include:

  • Banfield Pet Hospital
  • America's Best Contacts and Eyeglasses
  • Sauce on the Side
  • Smashburger
  • Crazy Bowls and Wraps
  • Salon Lofts at Chesterfield Crossing
  • Duck Donuts
  • The Curry Club
  • Body Fit Training
  • Gateway Aesthetics
