TROY, Ill. — A driver was killed and two others were injured in a crash early Wednesday morning on Interstate 55 in Madison County.
According to Illinois State Police, troopers responded at about 4:15 a.m. Wednesday to a three-car crash at the I-55 northbound/I-70 eastbound split in Troy, Illinois.
Patricia Corey, 65, of Troy, Illinois, was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the Madison County Coroner's Office, she may have been experiencing a diabetic emergency at the time of the crash.
The two other drivers involved suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to ISP.
I-55 northbound was shut down as crews investigated the scene, with traffic being diverted to I-70 eastbound. The interstate reopened at about 7:45 a.m.
Preliminary investigation revealed Corey was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-70 when she took the ramp to I-55 against traffic. When she attempted to make a U-turn, another vehicle collided with her car, causing heavy damage to the driver's side. Then, another vehicle collided with Corey's car, striking the rear passenger side.
ISP and ISP's Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit were continuing to investigate the crash as of Wednesday afternoon.
