Granite City woman dead after SUV crashes through fence along I-255

ISP said the SUV drove off the right side of the road and crashed through a fence just north of Stutz Lane.

MADISON COUNTY, Ill. — One person died Tuesday afternoon in a crash along Interstate 255 in Madison County.

According to Illinois State Police, the crash happened at about 4:10 p.m. Tuesday. A Ford Escape was traveling southbound on I-255 just north of Stutz Lane when the vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway for unknown reasons. It then traveled down a ditch, up a hill and struck a tree before coming to rest in a field.

She was pronounced dead at the scene just after 5 p.m. The Madison County Coroner's Office identified her Thursday as 69-year-old Melodye R. Fagan of Granite City.

ISP said one person died in the crash. Police had not yet shared the person's identity.

No other information was available as of Wednesday morning.
